Nice little dittie

Not much to say, but the piece sounds pretty good. A few annoying buzzing string parts, but not enough to detract from the overall piece. Good stuff.

thx

Bring out the background more

This sounds like a neat piece, but the balance between the melody in the brass and the accompaniment seems to disparate (to the point where you become rather aware of the realism failings of the brass instrument). I'd really like to hear more of the background on this piece, which where the "ethereal" feel seems come from.

knuxrouge responds:

Oh, I see.
Well with the trail version at my disposal, I am sorry to say, this is what we're stuck will, normally I would do it again, but a track this difficult really brings down my effort.
But thanks for your review.

Nice and mellow

I really like the mellow, almost sombre mood of this piece. Did you play or sequence this (a few notes sound kinda of MIDI-ish, but other than that, it feels very natural)? Production-wise, I'd liked to have it a bit more spaced-out (ie, reverbed), and crisper (filter out the muddy sections, maybe boost the high-end a bit), but it's pretty good as it is now.

WinTang responds:

Thanks! It's not sequenced, I plugged in my guitar and recorded it to CoolEdit or something. Back then I didn't know much about mixing so I just left it like this. I'll look into your production suggestions some time, they sound like they could indeed mean improvement. Thanks a lot! Check my other stuff too, if you'd like.

Moody

I'm not too familiar with the New Wave genre (probably the only piece I've heard from it is Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint), but I found this piece to be pretty enjoyable. It certainly could work for a credits theme, given the mood is more subdued than face-paced. The only thing that kinda bothered me was the cymbal crashes - it sounds like they've been severly undersampled, or something - very lo-fi in comparison with the rest of the piece. But other than that, mixing-wise it's pretty good. Nice job.

Loosemore responds:

Thanks for the review!
You're right about the crashes. Even on the original mp3 (192 kbps) they sound a bit impotent.
I have to admit that was laziness on my part. I tend to just drag 'n' drop loops without really getting my hands dirty.

Thanks again for the comments, everything helps (I'm kind of learning as I go...)

Coolness

Wow, this is a really cool piece. Very interesting timbres you've created with the synths/samples (ie, that "meowing" sound). The sudden volume jump was a bit unexpected, but I did enjoy the noisy drums. Definitely one of the more original entries I've heard so far - keep up the good work!

Robot-Lock responds:

Thank you very much. And the "meowing" sound, I made that myself. Everything was made in FL Studio.

Neat Style

This probably would fit the "Misc." section better, but I'm liking what I hear for the most part (especially that middle section with the pumping bass and all kinds of stuff playing in the background - very nice texture). The more mysterious and ambient sounds seem to clash with the up in your face MIDI-ish instruments at first, but after a while I didn't mind it as much. Overall, this is a pretty good piece for a "1st song" - it's neither too random nor too derivative, and thus the end result is something unique that only you could have created. Good job.

LoneInstrumentalist responds:

A charming little tune

I liked the mood in this piece - it really does have that nice and relaxed feel, and the piano playing is pretty good too. I certainly can see this music being set to a beach backdrop. The only thing that kinda bothered was that on my speakers, the mids were kind of high, and I could hear it ringing (or is that actually a pad playing in the background?). Other than that, good stuff you've got.

Grimreaper0125 responds:

Thanks, I'm extremly new at this, so it's nice to get a good review :)

Neat piece

I really liked how you sort of collaged a bunch of instruments with somewhat conflicting rhythms and harmonies together - it really creates a neat texture. That said, it was kind of short, and you probably could even do more with this. But definitely, this is one of the more original attempts I've heard so far on this site. Good job!

sente3 responds:

Thanks for a good review and yeah it is sort short. If you wanted to give me some suggestions that would go with the rest of the song, you can IM me on AIM. My screen name is sente3.

Argh the strings

I can't stand the diminished chord that plays in the strings... it just sounds, I donno... But other than that, I really like the beat, and you even sampled the Amen Break into there, heh. If this was intended to for someone to rap over, though, you might want to change the part where the dance beat comes in - I just can't see that mixing well to lyrics.

Para-Noid responds:

thats why its called mixup. and its not supposed to have lyrics. in it

Nice piano-work

This sounds more like a video game rendition of an "ambient" piece, but it's pretty good. The piano playing is quite natural, and I the synth strings work well in context too. The only thing I didn't really care for is the percussion, which sounds like clicks/pops in my speakers rather than part of the music - either bring them out more, or use better samples.

LaymanLove responds:

Well thanks partner. The piano sounds real because I was actually playing it. In fact, that was 100% improv. Sorry about the drums, I guess I didn't want them to take over the song...you should turn on your sub though, they are mostly low freq.
