softer piano

I think the piano part would've sounded a bit better if you made it softer (ie, less velocity), with a more subtle, brooding feel. And if you added some crescendos and descrendos in the wind instruments on that of that, it would've been just about perfect for the mood. But as it is it's still quite a good piece. Good job.

Jo-Ker responds:

You're right. I'll update it if I get time. I just left everything at default velocity. I guess i wasn't really thinking about it. Thanks for the feedback

Nice use of panning

Really liked the dynamic panning in this piece - it keeps the flow very fluid, but also is not overdone to the point of being nauseating. Also really dig those metallic sounds/hits parts. Good variety with the music overall too, though there are a few transitions that I felt were a bit too rough. Overall, a great piece. Nice job!

Helix6 responds:

I tried to keep it low-key (hah!). I didn't polish this piece as much as I could have, and frankly, probably should have.

Cool stuff

You got some good riffs in this piece, but watch the mixing during the busier parts so they don't all get too jumbled up together (especially if you are listening with speakers rather than headphones). That said, I definitely prefer the less busier parts in this piece, but I think you can probably get the more dense parts to work with some careful balancing, or cutting some parts if necessary.

DreamEater responds:

thanks !
glad you liked it

Hmm

That fake sounding trumpet or whatever was really annoying at the beginning, and for a while it felt like the piece wasn't really going anywhere interesting. But I really liked how you started passing theme around with different sythns later on. The title sounds like it's just a fragment, so I hope you will choose to develop the full piece in such interesting ways. Keep it up.

zcult responds:

Appreciate the fair judgement. I know it's not particularly impressive.

Needs some more reverb

I think adding more reverb would make it feel more ambient. Also, I could almost hear this quiet synthy sounding sounding trail following the piano (during the parts without the block chords) - I'm not sure if it's intentional, but I think you can probably play off this more and make it a bit present, and perhaps have it evolve throughout the piece. There were a few awkward pauses after around 3:00 - I think you should make these sound a bit more intentional, even if they were already. Also, I think when you have both the left and right hand playing, the music starts to get clipped, so watch your levels.

Overall, I think this could've been developed a bit more (in spite of being minimal in its roots), and executed with a bit more deliberation.

Thetatronica responds:

My new song Liturgic Ceremony is basically this song done up in a much better way. Hopefully you like what I've done with this originally very bland piece.

Fight for your

I like the chords at the beginning part, but later it kinda breaks out into almost a speed-metal feel, which kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe if you make the piece longer it'll help offset the disjunct transition? Not bad at all though.

Evil-Dog responds:

I don't know if you played the game but I think that's where the song makes the most sense, not all by itself here.

Nice sounds,

I like the sound of this, but I think the loop is too short. It sounds fine for the first couple of times, but afterwards you sort of get the impression the song is stuck due to a cd being stuck or something. It should take more than an antecedent phrase to fix this, though.

Evil-Dog responds:

well....it's a menu music....are you staying in the menu for an hour?
You have to think about how the music is used...there's no point making a minute long piece when it's only gonna play for like 20 seconds.
thanks for the review

Brass kind of sucks, but interesting piece

The brass in the piece starts to play like a keyboard at parts, with sustained chords being rolled or pedaled or something. And when it gets loud, it has a rather annoying sort of sound. I think you should've added another lead instrument so you can just have the brass playing softer chords and not be in the foreground so much (unless you can get a better brass sample). Drum loop is alright, but the bass and whatever else ends up sounding really muddy.

MadCow responds:

thanks for the review. im considering making a version 2, or just plain another song like this soon. perhaps with like, flute or something lol.

Mysterious, though feels somewhat unbalanced

First off, the drums start off really off-beat, and it took a while for it to get on beat - this makes this piece sound really amateurish. I like the guitar effect that comes in, but you only seem to use it like twice in the piece - kinda blew my expectation of a guitar being in this piece. The rest of the piece seems to revolve around the string chord progressions, the melody mostsly being arpeggiated versions of the chords, but it kind of picked up around 1:50 when you have the alternating instruments play the melody. Wish this part would've been expanded, or led to a different section.

HaniiPuppy responds:

I didn't want the drums to start off on-beat, when i tried the drums on-beat, it just sounded kinda boring & cliché =p and if you listen carefully, it's morse-code xP

If you listen to the song with either a bass-booster or a decent pair of headphones, you'll be able to hear the bass guitar better, although the guitar i used for the switch from the intro the start of the first main part and the soft part to the 2nd main part, in my opinion, wouldn't have created the effect i was hoping for.

I was kinda hoping for the main melody to switch between the piano and the glock (the glock melody is alittle more complicated than the piano melody)

I'll keep that post in mind when i start the next piece, thanks for the CC!

I couldn't quite get the feel, but nice piece

I liked the intro part, but once you added the drum loop it started to head towards generic techno feel. The harmonies feel kind of consistent throughout, and the melody always felt like it had a dark tinge on it. I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't quite see this evolution that you speak of. Perhaps I'm not picking up on the subtly, but if so, I'd like to see variation to better underscore the changes.

As for the piece itself, I think I found it enjoyable as is, though maybe the drum loop could use more variation.

X-it responds:

I made this and indeed everything so far from samples that came with my programs. At the time I didnt know how to use my sample creator or anything like that. And I suppose you're right, the transformation doesnt really happen in the song. Guess it was an "in my head" kind of deal lol
