The volume sounds find to me

I think the levels are reasonable, but I'm listening on headphones - I'm guessing if levels need tweaking, the drums will probably need to lowered some (while everything else a bit of boost). Interesting piece though - nice use of effects to spicen things up here and there.

great review, thanks! :D

Wish it was a bit more ambient

I was hoping for a more ambientish piece, but I think the constant drum beat and regular ostinato parts kind of subvert that. Maybe you could add more effects and stuff to the drums - which really sound flat and dry right now - and just vary it a bit more in general. The 5thy synth had a nice sound, but I'd liked to have seen it vary more in rhythm, and generally carry more of a melodic contour rather than just spitting out notes on a regular basis.

The ending section was pretty neat though - you started added some more instruments for variation, and also that hp-filter felt like a good way to close the piece.

Overall, it's an alright piece, but could use touches to keep it more interesting.

Collagy

Feels like you threw in a bunch of unrelated samples together, but managed to make to fit them together. I'd soften up a bit on the drums though, and let some more of the background bleed through here and there to make it even more interesting. Also, you could try adding echo effects to the trumpet to make it sound more dubbish? Neat idea though.

Takes a while to get going

The intro feels a bit dull, but the piece picks up afterwards. The drums are probably the weak point of the piece - sounding rather repetitive (need some fills here and there) at parts and fake (especially the toms). I rather liked the distored guitar sound though, and would like to see it used some more.

Not too bad

I like the chromatic riff you got in there, adds a darkly edge to the piece. Not a big fan of the pounding bass kicks though. And during the last minute or so it seems like you kinda stop developing the piece and just let go on auto - and then just end sort of abruptly. Overall, not a bad attempt, but there are definitely places for improvements.

Cool

Definitely digging the latin vibes, though it's some tremelo for the melodic parts would be even better. It'd also be cool if you get a full band version of this. But nice job with this.

PHOENIXtrunks responds:

thanks! Yeah, I suppose a full band version would be cool...I guess I kinda wanted to capture the spirit of Spanish gypsies, just playing their flamenco songs on the corner of the street. :P But thanks for the review! :D

Edgy

Amazing piece of work you've got here. I really like the metallic drum loop thing that you use throughout the piece (really nice slicing and effects by the way) and the little ambient interludes in between. Maybe the only complaint I have is that it kinda took a bit for it get really take off (in my opinion anyways), but overall this piece is pure gold. Great job!

Hypnotic

Digging the groove - it really does feel hypnotic OO. Almost makes me not realize that the whole thing is really just 8 seconds of unique material. Almost.
It'd been a nice surprise if somewhere along the second half you break out with a variation, slight or heavy. Otherwise, there really isn't a reason to keep this at 2:00. But it's good stuff.

Win

Really dig the eclectic feel of this piece. The drums feel more DnBish than Trancish, and the seventh chords gives it a neat Jazzy feel (and there's some parts that even sound ambientish with the ambient pad thing). There's this minor gripe with the bass sometimes clashing with the chords, but it's no big deal - maybe even appropriate give the nature of the piece. And yeah, it certainly does portray the image of surfing the Audio Portal. Nice job!

Happy

The first half or so has a more serious/bleak feel, but once the little arps come in the it starts feeling rather bright. I also like how you sort started adding a lot of parts during the "happier" section, and generally mixed it up enough to keep the whole piece interesting. That said, I didn't like the first part as much cause it had more generic (dark) trance feel. But overall it's a neat piece. Good work!
