A charming little tune

I liked the mood in this piece - it really does have that nice and relaxed feel, and the piano playing is pretty good too. I certainly can see this music being set to a beach backdrop. The only thing that kinda bothered was that on my speakers, the mids were kind of high, and I could hear it ringing (or is that actually a pad playing in the background?). Other than that, good stuff you've got.

Grimreaper0125 responds:

Thanks, I'm extremly new at this, so it's nice to get a good review :)

Neat piece

I really liked how you sort of collaged a bunch of instruments with somewhat conflicting rhythms and harmonies together - it really creates a neat texture. That said, it was kind of short, and you probably could even do more with this. But definitely, this is one of the more original attempts I've heard so far on this site. Good job!

sente3 responds:

Thanks for a good review and yeah it is sort short. If you wanted to give me some suggestions that would go with the rest of the song, you can IM me on AIM. My screen name is sente3.

Strange Off-beats

The transition in the beginning is kind of harsh - it sounded like you were going for more of a four to the floor beat, but then you suddenly switched to a more hip-hop/R&B beat. And those drum hits that come on the off-beats... well, sometimes they sound a bit too off-beat, almost random.

Argh the strings

I can't stand the diminished chord that plays in the strings... it just sounds, I donno... But other than that, I really like the beat, and you even sampled the Amen Break into there, heh. If this was intended to for someone to rap over, though, you might want to change the part where the dance beat comes in - I just can't see that mixing well to lyrics.

Para-Noid responds:

thats why its called mixup. and its not supposed to have lyrics. in it

Nice piano-work

This sounds more like a video game rendition of an "ambient" piece, but it's pretty good. The piano playing is quite natural, and I the synth strings work well in context too. The only thing I didn't really care for is the percussion, which sounds like clicks/pops in my speakers rather than part of the music - either bring them out more, or use better samples.

LaymanLove responds:

Well thanks partner. The piano sounds real because I was actually playing it. In fact, that was 100% improv. Sorry about the drums, I guess I didn't want them to take over the song...you should turn on your sub though, they are mostly low freq.

Pretty solid loop

This doesn't sound like it took much effort, but the end result is not too bad at all. The instruments are all mixed pretty smoothly (though I'd like to see the organ brought out just a bit more). And since it's pretty short, you might wanna add a repetition or two, so the looping sounds better (the newgrounds player of course has a delay which kinds of messes it up).

MaestroSorrow responds:

heh, you have NO idea how much effort that actually took (not this loop, but the finished product), as my first techno piece I am rather proud of it, not satasfied, but proud.

Many thanks for the review ^^.

Like the tune

But I don't care much for the synthy sounding pipe organ at all - the lower registers buzz on my subs like a sine wave or something :/. It'd probably be of more use arranged differently, or with a better organ sample.

Scarlatti responds:

I would not arrange this differently. Perhaps a better organ sample is doable, but the sample of the chapel organ is pretty spot on. It sounds exactly the way the real instrument does: pure and not unlike a sine wave. If I played it with the full cathedral organ, I think it would lose all of its mood. Thanks for the review.

I'm the only one that actually reviewed this!

So spare me, please!!! :P All in all, it's not a bad piece, but as you said, it's for a theory exercise, which often are fairly limiting in terms of expressing your creativity fully. Now, go off the other 29 people who've downloaded this but failed to review! ;)

Good soudning piano and guitar, but...

The rest of the mix sounds kind of weak, especially the percussion, which sounds like it's being sampled at 22khz or 8 bit, feeling very lo-fi. For the musicality, I kinda like the sort of minimalstic development, yet kinda disliked it too - I liked where you were kind of taking the piece, but in my opinion, you should've pushed the development even further before you ended it.

Diabolo-ical responds:

Yeah, I can agree with you here. But keep in mind I originally intended this to be a backing track to some vocals. I'm no singer though ;)

Thanks for the review.

Very rad snowman heh

I'm not sure why the title is as is, but this piece is pretty rockin' regardless. I like the nice mix of electronic and acoustic/electroacoustic instruments, and the arrangment is pretty solid too. Good stuff, really.
